Just a few tweeks can make all the difference in your effectiveness
Are you a PLANNER or a DOER?
Is your life working for you? Are your normal responses to work or life pressures, actually working for you? Are you constantly doing and feel un-prepared and are ‘afraid of being found out’! … or do you plan and plan and actually hate the nervous feeling you get when you have to ‘do’ and often ‘don’t’!
Roger Black, A successful management training specialist in his book ‘Getting Things Done’ … says: Human Beings spend either too much time thinking about work and not doing it, or the other way around: too much time running around doing, without stopping to plan.
Black says: Try some simple verbal tricks to get you thinking and doing differently and getting the right balance in your work …
Consider the importance of:
- THEREFORE if you are a ‘planner’
- WHY if you are a ‘doer’.
THE PLANNER:
If your comfort zone is PLANNING or you have a need for order, keep adding the word THEREFORE to every thing you do:
| Although we have a regular order, we have run out of an essential item for our work |
THEREFORE …
THEREFORE …
THEREFORE …
|
We will go the shop and purchase a similar item NOW & investigate LATER the reason for the unusual situation |
| John is off sick | We will call Craig or Anna | |
| There is no purchase order for an invoice … no purchase order equals no payment! | We will speak to the originator of the invoice NOW. |
THE DOER:
If, on the other hand, you hate paper work but spend too much time DOING and running around, keep asking yourself WHY you are making all this effort
|
WHAT YOU DO |
BECAUSE |
AND, LONG TERM, WHAT YOU GET IS … |
||
| Fitting a client/staff member into your Admin day |
WHY?
WHY?
WHY?
|
Making sure the client/staff member is OK |
AND
AND
AND |
YOU Add to your own pressure. RESULT: you cannot give 100% to your work in the long term |
|
Ringing in a ‘last minute’ change for a client before checking it out fully |
Providing a flexible tailor-made service | YOU add to your own pressure. RESULT: you cannot give 100% to your work in the long term
|
Answering the phone during a meeting (you have an answering service!)
|
Ensuring everyone is satisfied (except the person you are meeting with!!) | YOU add to your own pressure. RESULT: you cannot give 100% to your work in the long term
The process of growth will be evolutionary, but the net effect will be revolutionary.
