Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

Sometimes, we can get so preoccupied with life’s difficulties that we can become overwhelmed and feel wholly stuck.

Searching for the reasons why we have problems or how we got into the mess can result in frustration, depression, and feelings of helpless and hopeless, effectively doing nothing.

The Solution!
We suffer from ‘paralysis by analysis!

Solution Focused therapy says:

No problem happens all the time

None of us is angry, hurt, and sad or depressed in exactly the same way every second of the day.  So we look for when you are ‘less sad’ or ‘less depressed’ and then we find out what is happening at those times and we work on finding ways of replicating those times.

Understanding a problem is not always helpful

SFT recognises that attempting to understand the cause of a problem is not necessary, or particularly useful in some cases.  Haven’t you spent hours thinking about what went wrong or wondering why it had to happen or what you should do?

The future is both created and negotiable

Knowing that your future can be created and changed, or negotiated, means that human beings are not seen as locked into a set of behaviours based on history, a social division or a psychological past.

SFT is a future focused, goal directed approach to ‘brief’ therapy.  Aspects of SFT and CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) do overlap.  They both focus on thoughts and actions and both can be used in conjunction with many other approaches.  In my practice as a coach and therapist, I often combine SFT, CBT and EFT.  The results are an effective and powerful set of interventions that will enable you to make changes and achieve your goals in a way that is unique to you and your needs.

In order to get you there, here’s some of the questions I might ask you:

  • Are there times when depression doesn’t push you around so much?
  • How did you manage to outwit anger yesterday?
  • On a scale from 1 to 10 how confident do you feel about winning the war against pigging out?
  • What will it be like when jealousy can’t whisper in your ear anymore?
  • When anorexia lies to you are there times when you manage to disbelieve him/her/it?
  • What kind of qualities/resources did you draw on to defeat fear that day?
  • What kind of person could crush addiction in the way that you did?

I will guide you through the process of recognising when things are better, how to make those times last longer, and in a really practical way help you look for solutions not problems.
