Are you a PLANNER or a DOER?

Is your life working for you? Are your normal responses to work or life pressures, actually working for you? Are you constantly doing and feel un-prepared and are ‘afraid of being found out’! … or do you plan and plan and actually hate the nervous feeling you get when you have to ‘do’ and often ‘don’t’!

Roger Black, A successful management training specialist in his book ‘Getting Things Done’ … says: Human Beings spend either too much time thinking about work and not doing it, or the other way around: too much time running around doing, without stopping to plan.

Black says: Try some simple verbal tricks to get you thinking and doing differently and getting the right balance in your work …

Consider the importance of:

- THEREFORE if you are a ‘planner’

Choosing and achieving goals = courage, focus, & new wisdom

Courage does not always roar

. . . Sometimes it is the quite voice at the end of the day that says:

I will try again tomorrow.

Mary Anne Radmacher

Think of the acronym SPORT when you think of setting goals:

S Make your goals specific. EXAMPLE: ‘I want to feel normal nervousness about speaking in public
rather than petrified’.

P Make your goals positive. Move towards rather than away from a behaviour or feeling. EXAMPLE: I want to be more assertive instead of ‘I want to be less of a wimp!’.

O Make your goals observable. How would other people notice that you’d achieved your goal if they had to go on your behaviour alone?

R Make your goals realistic NOT pessimistic. Stick to what you can achieve. Your goals need to be within your reach and control. Concentrate on changes that you can elicit within yourself, not on changing others – get help if you struggle – no man is an island.

T Set your goals within a timeframe. Give yourself a deadline by which to reach your goals in order to help you remain focused and motivated – but be kind to yourself if you don’t get there as planned. Be flexible when you need to give yourself more time to achieve a goal: some goals take longer to reach than others – and things change along the way, so adjusting is normal.

Wanting Change is natural. Being afraid of change is natural. That makes change confusing and frustrating.

So my question is: when you do decide to make the changes how do you keep going. I used to think that I had to have all the answers to my ‘goals’ and then I heard the famous story told by Jack Canfield:

Moving towards your goals are like this:

Imagine a car driving through the night, the headlights only go a hundred to two hundred feet forward and you can make it all the way from California to New York driving through the dark because all you have to see is the next 200 feet. That’s how life tends to unfold before us. And if we just trust that the next 200 feet will unfold after that and the next 200 feet will unfold after that, your life will keep unfolding and it will eventually get you to the destination of whatever it is you truly want because you want it.”

I think the trick is to keep your long term goal (California), make a plan (turn the lights on – get your satnav set up) and drive! You cannot possibly see every twist and turn and the great thing about satnav’s that are tuned into your destination (when they are accurate!) is that when you veer off course because you missed a turn it will bring you back.

My biggest tip: look for answers, alternatives, and new ideas that will get you there and ASK
